Pendant Light Size & Hanging Height Guide for Kitchens and Dining Tables

Pendant lights are one of the easiest ways to transform a kitchen or dining space — but the two questions we hear most at Abeeha are simple: what size do I need, and how high should I hang it? Get those two right and even an affordable pendant looks designer.

How high should you hang a pendant light?

The general rule for pendants over a kitchen island or benchtop is to leave roughly 70–90 cm between the benchtop and the bottom of the pendant. That's high enough to keep sightlines clear, and low enough to throw a warm pool of light onto your work surface.

Over a dining table, hang the pendant a little lower — about 70–80 cm above the tabletop — so it feels intimate over the meal without blocking faces across the table. If your ceilings are higher than the standard 2.4 m, raise the fixture by around 7 cm for every extra 30 cm of ceiling height.

What size pendant light do you need?

For a single pendant, add your room's length and width in metres, then convert that number to centimetres for a rough ideal diameter. A 4 m × 3 m room (7) suits a pendant around 65–70 cm wide as a feature.

Over an island or long dining table, most spaces look better with a row of two or three smaller pendants or one linear pendant than a single small light stranded in the middle:

  • Island up to 1.2 m: two small-to-medium pendants, or one compact linear pendant.
  • Island 1.2–1.8 m: three pendants evenly spaced, or a linear bar pendant.
  • Island 1.8 m+: a large linear pendant or three generous pendants.

When you use multiple pendants, space them evenly and keep at least 30 cm between each so they read as a set, not a cluster.

Match the style to the room

Glass and orb pendants suit modern and coastal kitchens; rattan and timber tones bring warmth to Scandi and Hamptons interiors; sleek black or brass linear pendants feel contemporary over a dining table. Browse the full range of pendant lights, or jump to ideas for the kitchen and dining room.

How high do you hang pendant lights over a dining table?

About 70–80 cm above the tabletop, raised slightly for higher ceilings.

They should coordinate, not match exactly — repeat a finish like brass or matte black across fixtures to tie the room together.
